2025 and DAYLOG SONGS
2025 is off to a bad start. I'm pretty wrecked by the world, which seems at odds with my understanding of "good". It's hard to be motivated to do anything. I have to do stuff anyways.
Today, I released the DAYLOG SONGS 2024 album or EP or whatever. Each month I took a phrase from the previous, wrote a short song, and made a video. It started way quicker than it ended- Especially the songs, which were tweaked on and off for about a week sometimes.
Here's assorted thoughts:
Most of the songs are from negative thoughts! I used these songs to cope, I guess. The saddest song is "what's to say?" I think the dominant mood of the project is Wistful.
The first four songs are kind of a lie- I wrote those and made videos for those all in the month of April, I think. I only realized this was a good idea around then. At least I started before halfway through the year!
There was no overarching genre or style of music- I did what I felt like, similar to SPLIT WHOLE. I should probably try a project where I do something a little more consistent. I do think the structure of the songs could be a little better- the last 3 especially. they do like 2 verses and then just loop the chorus till they end.
I had some influences. "deep ear canal" is inspired by Tony Molina, and "absolute waste" is inspired very very loosely by hyperpop stuff.
Making the videos was pretty fun. I didn't want to do too much animation or whatever for the videos so I tried to get creative with each video. My goal was to have no repeats. I think it was successful! I'll probably do a talks about where I do some like commentary just for fun. Probably very soon.
This was a good project for me- The schedule-ness of it was a great motivator and grounder in a year where I was in free fall. Having patterns is good!
There's actually a song I replaced- "dehydrated grey" was an extra track I made during the first four months, and I like it far more than the original track I made for february, "special day brickwall night". I think my singing is way too rough on that track.
I like the picture on the cover. I knew it was the one the instant I saw it in my gallery. The bright green hill in front of the cloudy sky feels so apt.
cover image reminded me of Windows XP background, but more... wistful, yeah
