A while back, a local record store moved locations to nice big building. I started going there more often as a result, and got into the habit of buying wonderful CDs.
I play them in my car. I like letting them run sequentially. I like that when I turn the car off, it just resumes where from where it stopped. I like when they loop over again. I like letting people who get in my car pick a CD to play.
I try to buy CDs that I'm not that familiar with- It's fun to surprise myself with an album and sink into it. Listening to music while driving is great because it's one of the few times I get to listen without headphones. It feels like I engage more with the music. Sometimes I enter a trance like state where it just flows over me. Should I be in a trance while driving?
I like that used CDs are cheap. It's fun to flip through the packaging. CDs are Good!
Let's see CDs. I've organized them into groups, and put a threshold filter on them because I think it will look nice and snappy on a webpage.
SPECIAL EDITION
Bromst, Dan Deacon: Crazy busy electronic music. This copy is from a library. They categorized the genre as rock?
Mirrored, Battles: Crazy busy guitar music. I first heard the song Atlas in Little Big Planet in the 2010s. Comes with poster.
Images, FM Skyline: Woozy electronic music. I think FM Skyline is an atmosphere generator. Bought full price (Ouch) but comes with PC game on disc.
Sound-Dust, Stereolab: Future lounge. Not my favorite Stereolab release but still good. It's a promotional copy?
RECOMMENDED AND OVERHEARD
Soul Mining, The The: 80's synthy pop from England. Good stuff! Recommended to me by a friend.
The Soft Bulletin, Flaming Lips: Psychedelic rock, listening to it now. Read some conversation about the flaming lips and wanted to listen to them outside of the one song I heard on Pandora forever ago.
Fox Base Alpha, Saint Etienne: Electronic music that's sort of trip hop? My second Saint Etienne listen after hearing Geroge Clanton mention them in a video. I liked Good Humor more, but this was fun.
Dusk at Cubist Castle, The Olivia Tremor Control: Amazing psychedelic pop- a new all time favorite. Rediscovered this after seeing Liz Ryerson mention the band in an article.
PAPER CASE
(there's some other paper cases in this collection but they fit in other collections)
Immunity, Jon Hopkins: Tactile sputtering electronic.
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out, Yo La Tengo: Subdued rock. Haven't finished it yet, but enjoying it!
Double Negative, Low: Crushing music perfected on the band's next album HEY WHAT. This one's good too though!
THE NEW INDIETRONICOGRAPHERS
(Not every group theme is a winner)
Self Titled, The Postal Service: Classic album of indie electronic pop.
Up In Flames, Caribou: Warm music that sound like the best parts of nostalgia.
Mass Romantic, The New Pornographers: Bombastic pop- best exemplified by the awesome Letter from an Occupant
Electric Versions, The New Pornographers: A followup that unfortunately turned the energy down. I might try it again?
BROKEN (OR SO I THOUGHT) CDS
So Tonight That I Might See, Mazzy Star: Dreamy and sparse dream pop. The little tabs that hold the CD in are broken.
The Moon and Antarctica: Jangly and cosmic indie rock. A classic for me! The cover falls off.
Breakfast in America, Supertramp: Decadent rock? Lots of wonderful harmonies on it. A good time. I remember this having a broken cover but it didn't.
Viva! La Woman, Cibo Matto: My favorite Cibo Matto album- trippy, bass heavy, unusual. Sugar Water's music video is an awesome Michel Gondry piece. I also thought this had a broken cover. It didn't.
NOT MY FAVORITES
Where You Been, Dinosaur Jr: I fell in love with You're Living All Over Me, and then bought this- it wasn't as memorable.
Ágætis byrjun, Sigur Rios: I'm sad that this didn't connect with me!
Notorious Lightning and Other Works, Destroyer: I am a big fan of Destroyer, but I didn't care for this CD much. It's songs from the album Your Blues but done with a band instead of MIDI. I prefer the other versions.
Deserter's Songs, Mercury Rev: I was looking for another album of theirs but found this instead- I didn't really like it. I hope I like the other album more!
That's it, so far! I didn't mean to end on the "Not my Favorites" section but I fear reformatting this blog post.
I look forward to expanding the collection. I hope that CDs don't follow the same path as vinyl and suddenly become super expensive!
